Debit Card Fraud - 10 Safeguard Tips
10 TIPS TO SAFEGUARD YOUR MemberCard
Your MemberCard provides access to your account(s) and should therefore always be kept in a safe place and never “lent” to anyone, including friends and family.
You should protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN) – it is your electronic signature. Don’t disclose your PIN to anyone. Credit Union, Bank or merchant personnel should never ask you for your PIN. Try to memorize it. If you feel you simply can’t memorize all the PINs you have, try embedding them in a list, such as a telephone number list, that only you can decipher.
If you have several PINned cards, you should never assign the same PIN to all of them. If someone steals your wallet and discovers your PIN, you may rest assured they will test that PIN against all of the cards in your wallet.
When selecting a PIN, you should avoid the obvious - never use your name, street number, telephone number, date of birth, etc.
While conducting a transaction you should never let your MemberCard out of your sight. Credit Union, Bank and merchant personnel should never request your assistance with authenticating issues related to ATM or POS hardware or software problems.
Conduct transactions with your MemberCard only when and where you feel most secure. If you are uncomfortable, you should not use your MemberCard.
When completing a transaction, always attempt to use your hand and/or body as a shield to prevent others from observing your PIN as you enter it.
After completing a transaction, remember to take your MemberCard and, if provided, the transaction record produced by the merchant or ATM.
If your MemberCard is lost, stolen or retained by an ATM, or your PIN becomes known to others, immediately call 1 (800) LOST111 (or 1- (800-567-8111) for calls originating in Canada. For calls originating outside of Canada, call 1- (306) 566-1276 (collect). These numbers are available and can be used 24 hours a day.
Although robberies rarely occur at ATMs, you should remember that if it should happen, your safety comes first. Any incident of theft should be reported to the police and your Credit Union as soon as possible.
