We’ve seen a rise in fraud attempts related to unprotected emails.
Online fraud has continued to increase across Canada, with scams targeting high-touch industries such as finance, telecom, utilities, and retailers.
As we know, Manitoba residents have been fraud targets in recent years. Members using certain email addresses for their online and mobile banking, as well as any other email-associated service, that do not offer a multi-factor authentication (MFA) tool are put at higher risk for fraud attacks. At Access Credit Union, we are committed to protecting our members and their finances and data. Our security preference prioritizes avoiding the connection of non-MFA emails to our banking system, whether it’s online or mobile banking.
What is MFA?
Multi-factor authentication, also known as two-step authentication or two-step verification, is a multi-step login process that requires users to authenticate their information when logging in. For example, users might be asked to enter a code sent to their email or via text message, answer a secret question, or scan a fingerprint.
How are we helping our members?
Access Credit Union will continue to provide our membership with information and tools dedicated to cyber security and fraud prevention. Please watch our website, our social media channels, and visit our blog for current information.
Our representatives may also contact you to discuss your current security controls and how you can make small changes to better protect yourself and your information.
What do we recommend?
We strongly advise using an email address provider that offers multi-factor authentication for your needs, such as Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo.
It’s not only your online banking that needs protecting, but any service that requires email authentication such as DocuSign, CAFT systems, and other online services.
